About

My interest with art began in my middle school art class when my mom was my art teacher. In that class we did all sorts of projects across different mediums. One in particular that stands out is a fish that I had drawn with colored pastel. I discovered a love for color and rendering forms beautifully. It gave me a wonderful feeling to create something beautiful, and to use color to do that. As my artistic career has progressed I continue to be inspired by beautiful colors working together to create emotion and movement. I started to draw portraits for people, using interesting colors to try and draw out personality, particularly of dogs. Now I am studying art in college and discovering more and more ways to express that desire to create beautiful things. I think that there is something holy about the act of creating. Creating artworks that bring people joy, or giving someone a portrait of someone they love is a kind of sacrament for me.

Artists that inspire me include Winslow Homer who uses color and light to express emotional context and feeling. I also love Michaelangelo, whose sculptures pay such beautiful honor to the image of God. My artistic journey is young and has a long way to go, and I am excited to continue to walk in the path that the Lord lays out. I am excited to continue to discover beautiful colors, lights, and shapes. To meet other artists, past and present, that will continue to inspire my own work. There is a long life of beautiful things ahead and I am grateful to experience it all.

Jon Kumnick is a 20-year-old artist living in McLean, VA. He has a particular love for color and uses it to draw emotion and personality from his works, particularly portraits. He began thinking about art more seriously in his sophomore year of high school when he drew a portrait of his then girlfriend’s dog for Valentine’s day. It was then that he discovered people liked his art and he could use it to really bless them. Around that time his parents put him in an extra curricular formal art program called US Arts where he began to seriously think about art as a discipline. Since then he has worked on a multitude of projects including portraits of pets and family members, multiple book covers, and two children’s books.

Jon has not yet fully found his artistic voice and is spending his time studying lots of mediums and artistic styles. He is currently studying art and philosophy at Covenant College on Lookout Mt. Georgia. He loves his professors and is using the opportunity to grow in his artistic craft and develop relationships with older and wiser artists and mentors.
